When the colonial artists arrived on Australia’s fair shores they gasped in wonder at the clarity and strength of the light. Our summer sun cut through with piercing colours and dramatic shadows which inspired and upturned the style of the European trained landscape painters.
Photographers feel it too. We revel in the contrast and in saturated tones. We create images with strong shapes and the vigour and intensity of youth, as befitting our national spirit.
Just as the colonials delighted in the ‘new’, when I was gifted this misty scene I delighted in capturing the ‘old’, feeling more like a JM Turner painting the soft atmosphere of England, than a photographer on our own Mount Lofty.
